Life along the Great Northern Railway 1915-16
The family of the late Mr Vern Wallage donated this collection of postcard photographs to the National Trust at Victor Harbor, and they were subsequently passed to ‘Leigh Creek - The Old Town Project’ to be digitised and restored. George Vernon Wallage and his family lived in Quorn circa 1915 where it is understood he worked for the railways. His collection of photographs documents life along the Great Northern Railway around 1915-16. Places like Beltana, Copley and Hergott Springs (renamed Marree in 1917) were just some of the many towns along the line. The railway provided transport for wool and stock, from outback stations to Pt Augusta, and supplied the towns providing essential services like the Post Office, Police, Hotel and a General Store.
