Birdsville Races 1971

It was always an event to go to the races somewhere around Leigh Creek – Hawker, Beltana, Marree, William Creek or any one of a number of venues were always popular. In 1971 Don and Sondra Franks teamed up with friends, Ron and Jill Napier from Murnpeowie Station, and accompanied them to Birdsville for the annual races. The Napiers' had a promising nag that could run a bit, and a debonair young station hand who could ride, so they had entered with dreams of getting their hands on the coveted silver cup. They loaded their horses into a truck, and with the Franks’ tagging along in their Ford, set out across the Birdsville Track. It was an arduous trip but the Murnpeowie team was in good spirits and looked forward to the challenge of the big race. History records that a fancy horse called “Felix Star” won the cup that year and the Napiers' returned home empty handed. But the adventure was worth a thousand cups and the memories have lasted a life time. (Photographs - Don Franks)
