Leigh Creek township is in the middle of Flinders Ranges pastoral country. Indeed, pastoral leases at Leigh Creek, Beltana, Lyndhurst, and many others, feature in the town’s story and have always been frequented by its residents. Likewise, towns like Leigh Creek and Copley provided vital links to goods and services for these remote station properties. Umberatana Station has been a pastoral lease since 1858. This gallery is a collection of Malcolm Treloar’s photographs. Malcolm and his family lived at Umberatana during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Umberatana is Adnyamathanha country and with the help of local aboriginal stockmen, they ran thousands of sheep in the rocky hills to produce wool.
