Motorbikes & Buggies
“These pictures were taken in 1973 near where the Motocross track was. It had lots of creeks, jump ups and the best part - no rocks and plenty of bulldust. When the dust became a real problem ETSA came to the party with the old Leyland Hippo watercart. Once Kel Corbell gunned the old watercart to get up a steep jump and launched the front wheels about 6 feet in the air. He certainly got a good reception from the crowd that day! At one event the Motocross Club sponsored an ex Australian Champion (Ivan Maugher) to appear. He was riding a very good motocross bike and won all his events, however Eddie Nicholls (Red Breeze) was a very close second to him in each event. Red Breeze was riding his 600cc 4 stroke Yamaha THUMPER which was nowhere in the class of the other bike. The crowd was convinced Eddie could beat him and agitated for them to swap bikes. Unfortunately the swap did not eventuate and we will never know.” - Peter Smith (2020)

Buggies up the Birdsville Track
“We went to Etadunna Station on the Birdsville Track for Easter 1971. It was after the first of the big rains in the early 70’s and we wanted to see if the water was crossing the track. The Highways Department had positioned the punt at the Cooper crossing and we were keen to see it get commissioned. We found a heap of old vehicles, mainly in Lyndhurst & Copley and stripped them down by removing everything that wasn’t necessary. Peter (Spiro) Bould’s buggy retained the rear seat for the two wives that went (Henni Bould & Jackie Hines.) It was called the “LIMO” for obvious reasons. When we got there – there was no water so we chased brumbies across a dry Koppermanna Lake in the buggies.” - Peter Smith (2020)
