Gas was first discovered at Gidgealpa, in South Australia’s Cooper Basin, in 1963. Construction of a gas processing plant at Moomba and an 800km pipeline connecting the gas fields to Adelaide commenced in 1968. One of the first customers to buy this gas in 1969 was The Electricity Trust of South Australia. In 1974, the South Australian parliament agree to supply gas to New South Wales and a second pipeline was subsequently completed in 1976. Most of the infrastructure required to build the Moomba gas field and pipelines was transported to Leigh Creek by rail before being loaded onto trucks and driven up the Strzelecki Track.
